Eleventh Plateau by Out of the Box Intermedia is a multidisciplinary project, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture & Tourism and the British Council, involving collaboration across universities, art companies, and scientific institutes. The project employs structural affinities between ecology, architecture, performance, the visual arts and science so as to practically address the role of art in promoting new and critical ecological thinking and in creating innovative ecosystems.

Project Title: WATER- LC- FIRE

Fixatifs Works: Eleanna Martinou & George-Icaros Babassakis

The title refers to the great poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen, who spent some time of his life in Hydra and who is connected to the element of fire through a tragi-comic story: in his anger, he once cursed the house of the artist Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas (“I wish your house burned down”) because of a misunderstanding, and a few days later he saw it burning from a distance and thought it was because of his curse! (In reality, it was only a small field next to the house that had caught fire due to the caretaker’s carelessness).

The Creative Workshop FIXATIF WORKS (led by the visual artist Eleanna Martinou and the poet/author George-Icaros Babassakis) is preparing a tangled project incorporating elements from painting, sculpture, poetry and philosophy. Motivated by the above-mentioned event in Hydra at the beginning of the 1960s – an event which is mentioned in Leonard Cohen’s biography – we attempt to reflect on the dialectics between Water/Fire.

Promenade Lecture for one Visitor 18.00-21.00

Project Title:Trad IS(O)L and (Scapes)

Kom.Post Collective

The kom.post collective will guide individual visitors to the Eleventh Plateau, in a reality intertwined with fictional perturbations, through the two-day event. Kom.post’s artists will propose a series of promenades that allow each participant to connect to the vastness of an experience, to its extreme intimacy. IS(o)LAND(scapes) takes up the notion of the guide as it is used in cultural events (an oriented explication delivered in the form of an audio recording or through a human presence) and transforms it into a new territory shared by spectators and creators, in order to attempt, together, a new esthetic crossing, one that is inscribed into its particular context (these thematic days offered on the island of Hydra in July 2011), a milieu both vast and limited, in which one must orient oneself, find one’s point of view, find one’s place: in order to practice one’s own “ecology“. ECO-LOGOS: the common voice of our common and singular space. An eco-aesthetic based on the context of the Eleventh Plateau, that will guide each visitor, equipped with her/his “modified audio-guide“, through a particular trajectory, made up of deambulations, both mental and physical, and encounters with figures met by chance, others more troubling…; a landscape, or a part of oneself, that an exterior sign can evoke differently, passing by a tree or a memory, activating an intimate interior archeology.

On the 8th of July, the Underwater Camera that was placed in the sea as a monitoring system of the boats and sea organisms, was broken with violence from a representative of the Municipality, who said that he did not know it was a camera… We consider that action as a deliberate action related to a strategy against the Eleventh Plateau Festival and against an environmentally conscious festival in hydra.

ARTISTIC PROMENADES AT HYDRA’S INTRINSIC LANDSCAPE

The Museum

Last stop at the Hydra Historical Archives Museum. This place might as well be the starting and finishing point of an experience entitled Eleventh Plateau which is not just an exhibition but a whole festival. It began on the 8^th of July with three days of events and will continue until the end of September. The project consists of a series of initiatives including Art exhibitions, public interventions, conferences, education pilots and a publication, with the collaboration of organizations from 8 European countries. On the upper floor of the Museum one can see the works of the Eleventh Plateau exhibition, which also spreads to the route towards Kamini, with in situ installations which look as if aiming to incorporate and be incorporated by the local geography and tradition. “From a post-environmentalist perspective, the project considers the intrinsic connection of Nature to the wider social, political and economic forces and does not isolate the environment from other aspects of life”. Behind these initiatives is Out of the Box Intermedia, a non-profit organization with Sozita Goudouna as its artistic director. Ask for some guidance from the museum personnel and do not forget to let them know that you are going to see the exhibition on the second floor: the presence of someone in charge is mandatory for the proper viewing of some of the works…

Καλλιτεχνικές διαδρομές στο ιδιαίτερο τοπίο της Υδρας  Στο Σφαγείο, στο σχολείο, στο ΜουσείοΤης Νελλης Aμπραβανελ ΕΚΘΕΣΕΙΣ. Ανέκαθεν, η Υδρα προσέλκυε καλλιτέχνες και λάτρεις της Τέχνης από όλο τον κόσμο, ευαίσθητες ψυχές που ανταποκρίνονταν στο ιδιαίτερο τοπίο με τρόπους δημιουργικούς. Δεν θα έπρεπε να μας εκπλήσσει λοιπόν η φετινή καλλιτεχνική δραστηριότητα στο νησί. Αν είστε «κολλημένοι» στην Αθήνα αυτό το καλοκαίρι, ή αν παραθερίζετε κάπου στον Αργοσαρωνικό, προτείνουμε ανεπιφύλακτα μια μονοήμερη εκδρομή στην Υδρα, για λίγο ήλιο, λίγη θάλασσα και… Τέχνη.

Μουσείο

Τελευταίος σταθμός το Ιστορικό Μουσείο-Αρχείο Υδρας. Αυτό το σημείο μπορεί να αποτελέσει και αρχή και τέλος μιας εμπειρίας με τίτλο Eleventh Plateau που δεν είναι μόνο έκθεση, αλλά ολόκληρο φεστιβάλ. Ξεκίνησε με ένα τριήμερο εκδηλώσεων στις 8 Ιουλίου και συνεχίζεται έως και τον Σεπτέμβριο. Πρόκειται για μια σειρά δράσεων που περιλαμβάνουν εκθέσεις Τέχνης, δημόσιες παρεμβάσεις, διασκέψεις, πιλοτικά εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα και μια έκδοση, σε συνεργασία με οργανισμούς από 8 ευρωπαϊκές χώρες. Στο ανώτερο επίπεδο του Μουσείου παρουσιάζονται έργα της έκθεσης Eleventh Plateau, η οποία όμως ξεχύνεται και στη διαδρομή προς το Καμίνι, με in situ εγκαταστάσεις που μοιάζουν να έχουν στόχο να απορροφήσουν, αλλά και να απορροφηθούν από την τοπική γεωγραφία και παράδοση. «Ορμώμενο από μία μετα-οικολογική άποψη, το πρότζεκτ εξετάζει την εσωτερική σχέση της Φύσης με τις ευρύτερες κοινωνικές, πολιτικές και οικονομικές δυνάμεις και δεν απομονώνει το περιβάλλον από άλλους τομείς της ζωής». Υπεύθυνη για τις δράσεις αυτές είναι η αστική μη κερδοσκοπική εταιρεία Out of the Box Intermedia, με καλλιτεχνική διευθύντρια την Σωζήτα Γκουντούνα. ELEVENTH PLATEAU is a cross-border, site-specific project that aims to practically address the role of art in promoting new and critical ecological thinking and in creating innovative social ecosystems in Europe. From a post-environmentalist perspective, the project considers the intrinsic connection of nature to the wider social, political and economic forces and does not isolate the environment from other aspects of life. The project consists of a series of initiatives including art exhibitions, public interventions, conferences, ongoing discourse, education pilots and a publication, with the collaboration of organizations from eight European countries. Its central mission is to bring together politicians, artists, geographers, ecologists, economists, sociologists, architects and philosophers from across Europe to challenge each others thinking for an enquiry into the critical ecological issues of today and to discuss the shared concerns of these disciplines with regard to fostering new environments and sustainability in a longer term interdisciplinary exchange.

ELEVENTH PLATEAU sees the land itself as a living form of archaeology; given that it registers the impact of governmental policy, human migration, technological developments, changing environmental values, commercial interests and the shifting boundaries of urban and rural areas. The project examines a meticulous kind of compositional practice in which the machinery of nature and the machinery of art become one, in eleven different “sites-terrains” in an uninhabited island (Dokos-Hydra: In the 70s the most ancient shipwreck of the world has been found in the area around Dokos dated in the second half of the third millennium b.C.) and in 5 other cities of Europe. With the collaboration of architects, environmentalists, archeologists, artists and community involvement an interdisciplinary practice and discourse on the subject of eco-aesthetics, ecosystems, landscape reconstruction and its meaning for traditional cultural heritage will be instigated.

ELEVENTH PLATEAU  takes place in collaboration with the Ecological Association of Hydra (founded in 1988, the association is responsible for preserving Hydra as one of the few places in the world without vehicles). Hydra is unique in the world as a vehicleless oasis, thanks to the diachronic presence of the mule and donkey culture in the island. The preservation of the distinct historical and architectural landscape is formed as a result of community involvement, however, tensions occur between the community and investors- developers who want to alter this traditional landscape.

The project Eleventh Plateau by Out Of The Box Intermedia http://www.outoftheboxintermedia.org/

examines a meticulous kind of compositional practice in which the machinery of nature and the machinery of art become one, in eleven different “sites-terrains” in an Is/land of Greece. With the collaboration of architects, environmentalists, archeologists, artists and community involvement an interdisciplinary practice and discourse on the subject of eco-aesthetics, landscape reconstruction and its meaning for traditional cultural heritage will be instigated.
The project outlines the ways in which the collaborators of Out of the Box Intermedia draw on scientific and eco-philosophical developments to explore temporal and spatial interrelations, new forms of art interventions and to unfold the wide range of disciplines, theoretical, and artistic positions that comprise the relationships between spectator and artist/scientist. “Eleventh Plateau” as a performance as research project provides a form of compositional practice that generates critical “points of view” and operates in‐between the realities and different layers of the island: the archeological past, contemporary economic culture, the excluded and the popular. The project is engaging meditation on landscape, zoology (animal/human interrelations), land art and shifts in the representation of nature. The conjunction of cultural and perceptual ecology points in one direction toward a conceptualization of art practice as a process, one that is directly in touch with the natural world.

Σας προσκαλούμε να συμμετάσχετε ως ομιλητές ή ώς ομάδα φοιτητών στο The Eleventh Plateau – ένα διεπιστημονικό συμπόσιο κλιμακωτών δράσεων και συναντήσεων (βλ. παρακάτω + συννημένο) που οργανώνει η αστική μή κερδοσκοπική εταιρεία Out of the Box Intermedia.

Στον κλάδο του αστικού/ πολεοδομικού / τοπιακού σχεδιασμού τo συμπόσιο διαπραγματεύεται θέματα πολιτικής οικολογίας, θέματα ισορροπίας φυσικού /ανθρωπογενούς, θέματα πολιτιστικής γεωγραφίας, αναγνωσιμότητας του τοπίου, policies, θέματα επιμελητείας και οικολογικής ισορροπίας [ξηράς και ευρύτερου θάλασσιου χώρου ] γύρω από την τουριστική κινητικότητα, και την προβληματική των πιέσεων οικιστικής ανάπτυξης στην ευαίσθητη γεωγραφία του γιαλού που αφορά στον τουρισμό και παραθερισμό της Ύδρας ανατρέχοντας σε 11 σημεία.

Διευκρινίσεις: Το εργαστήριο, τα σεμινάρια, οι δράσεις και οι έκθεση της ομαδικής δουλειά σας θα λάβουν χώρα στην Ύδρα το τριήμερο 8, 9 και 10 Ιουλίου (Μουσείο Αρχείο Υδρας) . Παράμετρος συμμετοχής είναι η  αποστολή ενός συνοπτικού εγγράφου μέχρι 300 λέξεις (1 σελίδα)* από τον επικεφαλής που θα περιγράφει την πρόταση και κατ’ επέκταση θα αποτελεί την «ομπρέλα» τoυ προτζεκτ της ομάδας πάνω στο θέμα και το αντικείμενο της επέμβασης ή των επεμβάσεων.

Όρος για τη συμμετοχή είναι η συγκρότηση ομάδας από 3 έως 8 άτομα απο δική σας πρωτοβουλία που θα είναι σε θέση να παραβρεθεί  στο σεμινάριο της Υδρας για να υλοποιήσει, να επικοινωνήσει και να εκθέσει την πρότασή της σε κοινό έδαφος διαλόγου με καθηγητές και φοιτητές από πανεπιστημιακές σχολές της Σχολής Αρχιτεκτόνων της Αθήνας, της Πάτρας, του Βόλου και της Κρήτης.

Παρακαλώ επικοινωνήστε μας την δυνατότητα συμμετοχής σας μέχρι τη Δευτέρα 13 Ιουνίου.

* η κατάθεση του συνοπτικού εγγράφου απο τον επικεφαλής μπορεί να γίνει μετά τη σύσταση της ομάδας του και να κατατεθεί μέχρι ένα μήνα πρίν το συμπόσιο της Υδρας, μέχρι τις 13 Ιουνίου. Στη συνέχεια θα χρησιμοποιηθεί και ώς σύντομη ανακοίνωση απο τον ίδιο κατα τη διεξαγωγή του συμποσίου και των σεμιναρίων και θα πρέπει να είναι γραμμένο σε μορφή δημοσίευσης. Το εργαστήριο απευθύνεται σε φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες στο τελευταίο έτος σπουδών και νέους αρχιτέκτονες.
